New Jersey Road Test

Pre-drive check. Before hitting the road, the examiner will ask you to perform a basic vehicle check. This might involve demonstrating working turn signals, headlights, brake lights, and horn.

Basic maneuvers. The examiner will ask you to perform some fundamental maneuvers in a controlled environment, such as:

• Parallel parking. This is a common test, so practice parking between cones beforehand.
• Three-point turn. This maneuver demonstrates your ability to turn the vehicle around in a limited space.

On-road driving. Once the basic maneuvers are complete, the examiner will take you on a route that incorporates various road situations. Here's what they'll be evaluating:

• Following traffic laws. This includes obeying speed limits, stopping at signs and signals, and yielding the right of way appropriately.
• Lane changes. The examiner will assess your ability to safely change lanes, checking blind spots and using turn signals effectively.
• Maintain following distance. Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles is crucial, and the examiner will be on the lookout for proper following techniques.
• Turning and merging. Turning corners and merging onto highways require proper signaling and awareness of surroundings. The examiner will be evaluating your ability to handle these situations smoothly.
• Maintaining vehicle control. The examiner will observe your steering, braking, and overall control of the vehicle.

Practice is key to successfully passing the NJ road test. Here are some steps to ensure you're ready:

Before you take the road test-

• Ensure you’re comfortable with all required elements of the road test. Pick an empty parking lot, bring along your licensed driver, and practice those turns and tricky parallel parking maneuvers.
• Familiarize yourself with the test route. If possible, practice driving on the test routes used by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Knowing the route can help reduce anxiety and increase your confidence on test day. Pay attention to the road signs, and learn the flow of traffic at the time of day you schedule your exam.
• Take a mock road test with the experienced instructors at NJ Road Test. You can use our late model vehicles to take our practice test and also take your road test. The experienced and patient instructors will offer constructive feedback to help you improve and succeed. • Schedule an appointment through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) website or by visiting a local MVC office. NJ Road Test can also assist in scheduling your road test.

On the day of your road test-

• Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before and eat before you go.
• Arrive at the testing location early with your valid examination permit and an accompanying licensed driver.
• The vehicle you use for the test must be registered, insured, and in good working order. It should have a valid inspection sticker and no obstructions that could interfere with the examiner's view. When you use the same Lenny Driving School vehicle that you practiced in, the road test will be no sweat.
• Stay calm and focused. Demonstrate your understanding of traffic laws and safe driving practices during the road test. Obey speed limits, use turn signals, and be aware of your surroundings.

After the road test-

• If you pass, you will receive a certificate of completion and instructions on how to obtain your driver’s license.
• If you fail, don’t be discouraged—take note of the areas that need improvement, practice, and schedule another test. You must wait 14 days to take your test again.
